Looking for high-end lighting and electrical supplies and don’t know where to go?

Try A&S Electric Supply, Inc., 3140 Crescent Ave. in Erlanger. Originally founded by Robert Ash and Lawrence Smith at the end of Kenton Lands Road in 1969, the Erlanger company is now managed by son Tom Smith. Tom bought the store from his father in 1995 and he bought out his partner in 2000.

The company provides top-of-the-line electric supplies for builders, designers, contractors and customers from both sides of the river. Products include electric hardware and commercial lighting housed in a supply building located on 5 Coordinator Drive and residential lighting fixtures, displayed in a showroom on Crescent Avenue. While the supply warehouse was initially started to serve the Florence industrial market, wholesale and retail sales are available in both locations.

According to Smith, one challenge that A&S faces is that customers shop online with Amazon, which competes with the store.

Despite this, A&S chooses not to compete with big box stores, instead focusing on higher quality of merchandise. For those looking for residential lighting options, the residential lighting showroom is packed with options, with a large number and variety of quality fixtures available. A&S Electric’s products include traditional, modern and retro fixtures. Chandeliers range in price from $200 to $3,000.

A&S also relies on its staff to differentiate itself from its competitors. Long-term employees include Danny Sidebottom, who handles lighting and design sales. He has been in the business for 40 years, spending 20 of them in lighting. Dana Vines serves as showroom manager, and she has worked for A&S for several years. Smith says, “We give people a choice and a well-trained staff.”

Smith says trends are embracing LED technology, the return of track lighting, larger ceiling fans (90’ in diameter) and a wide choice of items selected specifically from the catalog. Recess lighting, on the other hand, is in decline.

In the end, it comes down to a customer’s preference. Sidebottom says, “Lighting is a fashion industry.”
