Bethany Village is a local landmark in Centerville, with its variety of freestanding residences and apartment buildings nestled along Far Hills Avenue. The community, now serving more than 700 individuals, has come a long way since its inception.

In 1946, The Lutheran Inner Mission League purchased a 100-acre farm with four houses in Centerville. The Lutheran Home for the Aged opened in one of the farmhouses and became home to 10 residents. Two years later, the Lutheran Home for the Aged was renamed Bethany Lutheran Village, and The Lutheran Inner Mission League is now known as Graceworks Lutheran Services.

Over the years, Bethany Village has expanded. “Several large construction projects have happened over the years, with the most recent expansion occurring in 2007. Within those years, campus services expanded and Bethany became a continuing care retirement community (CCRC),” says Jackie D’Aurora, vice president of marketing and public relations. This means that seniors who live at Bethany Village can expect to live in the village for their entire retirement, confident of having the support they need at all life stages.

There are villas set in wooded area and cottages flanked with neighbors for those who prefer freestanding homes. Apartments are an ideal choice for those ready to downsize. And a range of assisted living options includes skilled nursing and memory and dementia care. For those wanting temporary support while recovering from injury or illness, the Bethany Rehabilitation Center provides temporary care and therapy.

All residents have access to a range of programs and classes that help them stay active, healthy and connected. For example, the Hauer Swing Band has performed for the past 20 years at Bethany Village, playing songs such as those by Frank Sinatra and Cole Porter while residents listen and dance.

In September, Bethany Village residents will join with friends, family, staff and local Lutheran congregations to commemorate their 70th anniversary of service, while Graceworks Lutheran Services celebrates its 90th anniversary. This includes Graceworks at Home, Graceworks Housing Services, Graceworks Enhanced Living and Consumer Credit Counseling.

“Knowing that the senior population will continue to grow, Bethany Village keeps an eye on the future and how we can support older adults as they age,” says D’Aurora. “This means staying current on senior living trends and offering innovative life enrichment activities, extensive fitness, and dining programs with multiple living options to build a robust life for seniors who choose to live here on the Bethany campus as well as options for adults who prefer to age in place.”

“Bethany Village will continue to adapt to the changing needs and desires of an aging adult population. We are revisiting the campus master plan to determine if new construction, design or renovation might be needed in the future,” D’Aurora concludes. It’s clear that Bethany Village will be poised to serve the maturing population of the area for some time to come.
